The Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) is seeking applicants for the positions of Undergraduate course Coordinator and Co-Coordinator for Tropical Biology Summer in Costa Rica. This is an intensive four-week course in field research and tropical ecology for 22 undergraduate students. At its heart lie the highly regarded OTS “field problems” which focus on the formulation of feasible research questions, experimental design, data collection, analysis, and oral and written presentations.

Successful applicants will work closely with the Education Director and Undergraduate Coordinator on the design and implementation, and will be responsible for teaching aspects of the course. The applicant has to be comfortable with developing and conducting short research projects with students and visiting professors in the field, and should have a good understanding of ecological statistics. Ideal candidates will have a wide understanding and knowledge of current tendencies in Neotropical ecology with a background in behavioral ecology, evolution, physiology, molecular field ecology, conservation tendencies and climate change, such that they define and complement the expertise of invited specialized faculty to the course.
The Tropical Biology Summer course will be offered in June-July every year. Interested professionals may apply for several years in the Coordinator position or as Co-Coordinator.
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or M.Sc. in biology, ecology, conservation biology or a related field
- Professional experience in teaching field biology
- Professional experience in supervising undergraduate field research
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) desirable, fluent English required
The position is a 6-week contract with an anticipated start date of June 1, 2015, and an anticipated end date of July 14, 2015. The position includes course travel at various sites in Costa Rica from June 7, 2015 through July 7, 2015.
